Canada: Oh Sweet Honeymoon

Our honeymoon was AWESOME! It felt so great to get away, relax and take everything in that had just happened to us. I highly recommend, no insist everyone leave for their honeymoon asap after their wedding. I think you need to do this for your own insanity. Prepare for another wordy post but it will be filled with photos I promise.

The day after the wedding was a whirlwind that left us literally exhausted to the bones. Not only did we have a small get together to open gifts, we also had to unload our trailer, find room for mason jars, beer and wine bottles, gifts, decorations, heat up leftovers to feed our hungry helpers plus run a few errands for the trip and pack. Midnight came all too quickly and we still had to finish packing and find ourselves ready to go the next morning at 5am to head to the airport. Once we lifted off, everything started falling into place.

We flew into Seattle and rented a car (I totally played the "We're on our honeymoon" card and we were upgraded from a economy rental to a compact! Booya!) to catch a ferry in Port Angeles, Washington. Thanks to Joe's fast driving we were able to catch the early ferry over which left at noon instead of 5pm. We docked in Victoria, British Columbia which we both wished we could have spent more than twenty minutes in, found a grocery store and stocked up on some goodies and arrived at our first cabin at Fossil Bay Resort all before we were originally suppose to leave from Port Angeles.

Joe could not have picked a better place to start off our honeymoon. We had our own cabin that was very private, a hot tub on the patio overlooking the Pugent Sound, a kitchen, fireplace, a king size bed and a cute little bathroom. It was quiet and beautiful and we were so excited to be there. We made dinner and found ourselves in the hot tub watching the sun set in the distance. That first night we were sleeping by 9:30pm and it felt glorious. Morning came and we woke up, ate breakfast and I turned around and took a nap! (I may have done this a few more times on the trip:) My body was apparently exhausted and making up for its loss of much needed sleep and rest.

We spent a full day at Fossil Bay, exploring a couple beaches along the coast and headed out early the next morning toward Tofino. Vancouver Island has the mountains, ocean and hundreds of miles of rainforest. The trees there are HUGE and everything is so green and lush. That afternoon we pulled into our next place of solitude called Sea Star Resort. We stayed in the garden suite and it was gorgeous. It was one big room with a comfy bed, jacuzzi tub, kitchen, fireplace, couch, a private garden and it even had a washer and dryer! Yes, I did laundry on our honeymoon although that wasn't planned on...we needed a few things washed ha. Just across the street and down a little path was the Pacific Ocean. We were on Chesterman Bay and walked up and down it every night we were there. Two of the nights as we were watching the sunset, you could see humpback whales jumping on the horizon. I love, no looove whales.

Tofino is known for its surfing, especially during their winter storms and they were having their first few days of sunshine the whole summer. We had sun every day of our trip! We went on a whalewatching boat ride and saw gray and humpback whales, sea lions, harbor seals and a sea otter. We had great food at local restaurants and on our last day we rented wet suits and headed to Long Beach to jump in the waves and watch the surfers. The water was maybe 50 degrees so the wet suits were a necessity. The first five days of our trip were all about doing nothing and it was perfect in every way.

Next on our agenda was Vancouver, BC. Because of Joe's speedy driving again we caught another early ferry heading into Horseshoe Bay. Once we made it, we headed straight to Whistler on the Sea to Sky Highway. It was a fun drive and seeing where the Olympics took place was really cool. It was weird being surrounded by lots of people again because we had just come from a couple remote little towns and now we were in the middle of hundreds of thousands of people again. On our first night while walking around we noticed everyone was headed in the same direction so naturally we followed and ended up seeing fireworks shooting off from a boat out in the bay. Turns out we may have picked the busiest weekend in Vancouver - not only was it British Columbia Days but it was also their big Gay Pride Festival as well. Lucky us haha.

We spent the next couple of days exploring the city, Granville Island Market and the famous Stanley Park. Our honeymoon wrapped up in Seattle for the last two days of the trip. Of course we walked around Seattle's famous market and watched the sunset at the top of the Space Needle but we also went on the Underground Tour in Pioneer Square. When Seattle was first established, they built the city right next to the water and had many problems with their sewer system. Seattle is extremely hilly so when the tide came in everything would get pushed back up through the pipes or not be swept away when it should have been and that kind of thing. Instead of tearing down their buildings they left them as is, filled up the streets around them and created these tunnels under the sidewalk. It was really interesting, unfortunately while we were under the second building I fainted due to dehydration and the air being very muggy and stagnant so Joe took me back to the hotel early. Thank goodness he caught me:)

Our last day of the honeymoon of course snuck up on us and we soon found ourselves on a plane headed back home. It was the best thing we could have done to kick off a great start to our now married life. We did a lot of things, saw a lot of cool places and were also able to say, "Hey, let's just sleep in and do whatever we want the next day because we are not on a schedule, we are not keeping track of time" every day. I got lost in time every day and it was such a good feeling.
